Poll Analysis

Poll 9

Our 9th poll. From the extracted results, 5 voters would take OnLive into consideration as their gaming platform. We could conclude that these voters feel this platform could compete against other its more established rivals a run for their money.

We were a little surprise to see that the Playstation and Xbox platform getting only one vote each. I suppose it does make sense from a hardware point of view. You don't have to get a new console every generation refresh with OnLive after all.

Thanks fellow voters !

An Interview with Sir Tim Berners-Lee

Link to us : http://sn.im/sirtimberners

An interview with “the father of the internet”, Sir Tim Berners-Lee was interviewed by New York Times technology reporter, Steve Lohr at the Embassy of Finland in Washington on October 2009.

During the interview Sir Tim Berners-Lee gave his views and explains the work flow of the Semantic Web with intriguing perspectives.

This 37 minute video was brought by the Finland Technology Academy Foundation. Currently that foundation presents the Biennial Prize to any individual in the form of cash, $1.4 million for a technological achievement that benefits the society. Unsurprisingly, Sir Tim Berners-Lee is the winner.

I understand how you feel, 37 minutes ? WTH ? Just bare with me. I wouldn't put you all through such a lengthy video if it wasn't good.

Future Hardware

Link to us: http://snipurl.com/intel10cores

Hardware is equally as important as the software that makes use of it. You can have the fastest CPU coupled with the fastest graphic card, but without proper optimized drivers, all that power is useless. Vice versa, you have software able to take advantage of parallel computing (running on multiple cores) , but your hardware is as old as a Pentium 4.

From all of our articles, i'm sure you can guess by now that the computing power required by future web generations will be enormous. How are the future web servers able to cope with such demands such as cloud computing? Pushing data, not to mentioned the processed games from OnLive servers?

Well towards the middle of 2011, web servers will have the option to be equipped with 10 CORE processors ! Yes 10 cores !

Intel will be releasing their latest refresh to the Xeon line, codenamed "Westmere-EX". For those whom aren't aware, octo-core CPU's have been around since 2010 it self.

Whats so remarkable then, right?

Hello !?!?! that was just a year ago, and a year later 2 additional cores have been added. If Intel keeps this pattern up, theres no doubt that web servers of the future will have plenty of power at their disposal. Not to to mention, be more environmental friendly with lower power consumption rates.

Keep in mind, all Intel CPU's since 2010 come with Hyper Threading, a feature which adds a virtual thread, giving each core 2 threads. Do the math, 10 cores with Hyper Threading gives us 20 THREADS from ONE CPU !

Whats your prediction for next year? 12 cores for 2012?

Poll 8

Five voters feel the next generation could pose a threat to society. Their right ! As we've mentioned, with Open ID getting more integrated into a singular account, one hack is all it takes.

Only one voted NO. Perhaps this voter has faith in the security of the future web systems. It's always good to have positive thinking here and there.

And no votes for Maybe. Good to know that no one is uncertain about this. As usual, thank you fellow voters.

The Sucessor

Link to us: http://sn.im/sucessor

A discussion taking place on a Tuesday afternoon.........

Hartrishen : Hello ladies and gentlemen. A good morning,

Thiru: good afternoon,

Emil: and good evening

Hartrishen: to all of you. Today we the third gen will be sharing with you on the future,

Emil: Not web 3.0

Thiru: But another step further into the future,

Hartrishen: WEB 4.0 !......................So what exactly is the next generation of web ?

Emil: Well there’s no clear definition of what it might even be yet.

Thiru: Except for the term WEB 4.0 ! (laughter)

Emil: There’re only theories on what it may be for now.

Hartrishen:
I see. While I was digging around the web a few days ago I came across the term Web OS?

Emil:
Yeah, it basically unifies the internet into an operating system like environment, where by everything gets standardized.................So viewing the same website across multiple devices like smart phones and PC’s will be the same.

Thiru: That pretty much sounds like Web 3.0 doesn’t it?

Hartrishen:
Of course but perhaps what he means that Web 4.0 will take this Web OS idea deeper in some way. I mean there will be similarities between these two era's. Look at Web 4.0 and 3.0, both have AJAX, both have Open ID, web 2.0 has Open ID on a small scale like Facebook Connect and Google Connect. So Web 3.0 like what we posted earlier, will unify all of these details into a singular account, and these features will be built upon from there.

Thiru:
Right. Here’s something very UN Web 3.0 like. Artificial Intelligence ...... With web 3.0, it learned about us, our preferences and gave suggestions based on that. Whereas with 4.0, computers begin making the decision for us. The projected evolution of this technology could lead to humans and robots working together. Robots that will act and think like us. So A.I will probably start with computers and then move forward from there…..

Hartrishen: TERMINATORS ! Arnold Swarchenegger ! SkyNet ! (laughter)

Emil:
So what Thiru just described can actually be considered as symbiosis also............when two different organisms live together.

Hartrishen:
If you don’t get the idea, then just picture an automobile factory. Man and machine co exist, working together to assemble vehicles.

Emil:
Yeah, so this is where web 4.0 gets referred to as the Symbiotic Web.
Besides that, just like how we’re able to understand pictures and form a thought on it, the web will gain this ability. This is taking the semantic web to a whole new level by bringing in images..................and the scary part is, the web can now identify US !

Hartrishen:
Well that's pretty much what web 4.0 is all about for now, just theories and speculation. When web 3.0 goes into full swing, then more details of the next generation will unfold.

Signing off, from Hartrishen, Emil Anthony and Thirupathi. Terima kasih and thank you for tuning in to us.

Poll Analysis

Poll 7

7 voters this time around for our poll on cloud computing. It's good to see 4 voters feel that its convenient. Well it is, isn't it? All your data practically follows you every where (with an internet connection of course ) . Thus, theres no need for physical media to carry around, which might i add is susceptible to loosing, like leaving your thumb drive behind, anyone?

Only one however felt it's unsafe. Well true as well. With all of your data online, its prone to hackers intercepting it, like during retrieval or uploading. Either way, the feeling of leaving everything online, or shall i say in the clouds, could rain back down on anyone. Not a pleasing feeling.

Which is why i believe 2 voters had mixed feelings about it. While there are a wealth of benefits, it also has its fair share of detriment.

Thank you fellow voters once again !

The Fall of the Semantic Web

Link to us : http://sn.im/thefallofsemantic

Well judging from the title we might draw a conclusion that the application is failing but definitely it is not just a few errors here and there which I thought of sharing. This was on my mind throughout as the works done in Moncton on a project e-learning cluster and I saw that the ‘cluster building’ is still considered to be one of the major pillar of NCR’s strategy, which brings to wonder whether our valuable work would on still linger to be part of that strategy again.

It was running through my head just now, the work that we were doing here in Moncton to work on an e-learning cluster. Because I saw that 'cluster building' is still one of the major pillars of NRC's strategy, and I was wondering whether our work would ever be a part of that again. As my mind begin to wander how some of the things that did not go very well in our first few years, encountering many challenges and hardships. As creating ‘brand image’ was most challenging and tough as some of the companies went under – a couple basically for them to put that thrust in us was really a ‘trying moment’. Some of the companies even before we can talk to them, another, after we were in a project with the company as then we were able to sat down with in 2002 or 2003 and laid it all out nicely based on RSS, content syndication, social networks basically narrowed to the whole Web 2.0 application. And even with all that the companies weren’t interested and within less a year they were gone.

And off cause I thought about where we’re right today and where we might be wrong and why because despite having a pretty record –, as it is on the ‘this years predictions which includes Open ID and the runaway success. From my point of view the semantic web would not work and cannot work. Such a intuition is very difficult to explain as I was focusing on the edgy things of Web 2.0 which indeed was showing some cracks.

Some highlights on the key things of today are :
  • As Yahoo is presently forcing people up their Flickr identities and ask them to join the mother ship.

  • MySpace is blocking all the widgets which is not supported by some sort of business deal with MySpace.

  • And off cause the rumors that Google is turning off the search API also the Semantic Web will never depend on business working together and cooperating.
